7 Ways Lower Protein Intake Could Affect Aging, Metabolism, and Longevity, According to New Research

WASHINGTON, DC — New research is giving an unexpected nudge to a familiar nutrition question: could eating less protein help some people live longer? A review published July 31 suggests that lower protein intake, especially from certain amino acids, may support healthier aging. But the findings come with a big caution — protein needs are not the same for everyone.

The evidence points to possible benefits for metabolism, inflammation, and cellular repair. At the same time, older adults, athletes, pregnant people, and others may need more protein, not less.

1. Lower protein intake may support healthier aging in some people

The review found that moderate protein restriction was linked to longer life span in rodent studies. Researchers also looked at restricting specific amino acids, including methionine, isoleucine, and valine, and saw similar effects in animals. That does not prove the same result in people, but it does suggest protein intake may shape how the body ages.

Lead author Dudley Lamming, PhD, said the benefits of protein for muscle growth and exercise response are clear for active people. He also noted that many sedentary adults may be eating more protein than they actually need.

2. The biggest clues so far come from animal studies

Most of the strongest findings in the review came from rodents, not humans. In mice, higher levels of the hormone FGF21 were tied to longer life span, with female mice living about 40% longer and males about 30% longer in the studies reviewed.

That is promising, but it is still a long way from a direct recommendation for people. The researchers said longer-term human studies are needed before anyone can say that eating less protein truly extends human life.

3. Protein restriction may improve blood sugar and fat levels

Short-term clinical trials in people suggested that reducing protein intake may improve blood sugar control and lower fat mass. Those results hint that protein restriction could affect metabolism in useful ways, even if life span has not been shown to change in humans.

Some experts found that surprising. Mir Ali, MD, of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center in Fountain Valley, California, said many current diet approaches emphasize protein while cutting back on carbohydrates and sugars.

The review focused not only on total protein, but also on amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. Higher intake of methionine, isoleucine, and valine may activate pathways involved in growth. When those pathways stay too active for too long, researchers think they may raise the risk of inflammation, obesity, and other aging-related conditions.

That means the quality of protein may matter as much as the amount. The study points to a more nuanced picture than simply “more is better” or “less is better.”

5. Lower protein intake may trigger repair processes in the body

Animal studies reviewed in the paper suggest protein restriction can shift several biological systems associated with healthy aging. It may raise FGF21, influence the nutrient-sensing pathways mTORC2 and GCN2, and promote autophagy, the body’s process of clearing out damaged cell parts and replacing them with healthier ones.

Researchers also found signs that protein restriction may improve mitochondrial function. That could mean less oxidative stress, better energy production, and even more youthful gene-expression patterns.

6. More protein is still important for many groups

The review is not a blanket endorsement of eating less protein. Older adults often need more, not less, with suggested intakes of 1.0 to 1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight daily. For people with sarcopenia or certain chronic diseases, needs may rise to 1.5 to 2.0 grams per kilogram.

The same goes for pregnant people, children, adolescents, athletes, and people recovering from illness or injury. The right amount depends on age, activity level, and overall health.

7. There is no one-size-fits-all protein target

Current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily for adults, which can be up to twice the minimum recommended amount. But the review’s bottom line is that protein needs vary widely, so one person’s ideal intake may not work for someone else.

Before making major dietary changes, the researchers and experts advise speaking with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian. That is especially important if you are older, very active, or managing a chronic condition.
