Must Watch Korean Dramas

Haley U., Blogger

I’ve found these K-dramas to be all binge-worthy candidates when you’re looking for a show to finish in a couple of days.

Legend of the Blue Sea stars Jeon Ji Hyun as Shim-Cheong (means unintelligent ) and Lee Min Ho as Heo Joon-jae in a hilarious comedy with romance and fantasy. The show centers on the love story of Joon-Jae and a mermaid named Shim Cheong.  Joon-Jae is the son of a rich businessman who becomes a handsome

and clever con-man after his parents’ divorce.  Focusing on rebirth, fate, and unrequited love, their tale is mixed with the parallel story of their Joseon era incarnations, town head Kim Dam-ryeong and the mermaid Se-hwa.

I loved this drama because there’s a bit of everything, including a nerve racking action scene or cliffhanger to make you watch more.  There’s an adorable love story that will make you giddy with delight.  There is so much character development in this drama that will give you a sense of joy. Shim-Cheong becomes stronger as a person and cares dearly for everyone around her instead of being a naive and stupid person.

W- Two Worlds stars Han Hyo Joo as Oh Yeon-Joo and Lee Jong Suk as Kang-Cheol in a fantastic thriller with romance and fantasy. Cardiothoracic surgeon Oh Yeon-Joo’s father mysteriously went missing while writing the last chapter of his webtoon “W”. Yeon-Joo goes to his office and is shocked to see a scene of the dying Kang-Cheol, the main character of “W,” on her father’s computer. While reading a note left behind by her father, a hand from the monitor pulled her in and she finds herself on the rooftop of a building next to a bleeding man. She manages to save him and realizes that the person she saved was Kang-Cheol. Yeon-joo later discovers that she can only leave the webtoon based on Kang-Cheol’s change in feelings. When that happens, the words ‘To be continued…’ will appear and she will teleport back to the real world.

This drama is amazing in so many ways. It has so much suspense. Everytime I had to stop watching it I’d become heartbroken because I wanted more.

Cinderella and the Four Knights stars Park So Dam as Eun Ha-won, Jung Il-woo as Kang Ji-woon, Lee Jung Shin as Kango Seo-woo, Ahn Jae Hyun as Kang Hyun-min, and finally Choi Min Sung as Yoon-sung in an amusing drama. Eun Ha-won is a high school student who dreams to be a teacher, but needs money for her education. One day, she meets the chairman of Kang Group who offers her the chance to live in his house if she accomplishes the mission of reuniting his three grandsons.  She must follow some conditions, including not dating them. At the Sky House, she meets Kang Ji-woon, a soft hearted but lonely and wild-child rebel, Kang Hyun-min, a playboy plutocrat who does whatever he wants, Kang Seo-woo, a top singer-songwriter who is gentle and kind to Ha-won, and finally Lee Yoon-sung, the chairman’s secretary and their bodyguard.

This show was so fantastic and it just made we scream all around because Eun Ha-won was being adorable. All I want for her is a happy ending.

Descendants of the Sun stars Song Hye Gyo as Kang Mo-yeon and Song Joong Ki as Yoo Shi-jin in a heartbreaking drama with giddy moments is a must see. UN peacekeeping troops are dispatched to the war-torn country of Uruk. Captain Yoo Shi Jin, team leader of the Special Warfare Command unit, meets Kang Mo Yeon, a volunteer doctor with Doctors Without Borders. As they work alongside each other in disaster- and disease-stricken zones, Shi Jin and Mo Yeon clash then fall in love.

This show would get you mad because Yoo Shi-jin would do something unbelievably stupid, then makes you laugh because he makes jokes at wrong times. You will laugh, cry, smile, and chuckle by watching this show.

Goblin stars Kim Go Eun as Ji Eun-tak and Gong Yoo as Kim Shin.  Kim Shin is an immortal goblin and protector of souls. He lives with an amnesiac grim reaper who is in charge of taking deceased souls. Together, they see the dead off into the afterlife. One day Kim Shin meets a girl, Ji Eun-tak, who has a special ability to see ghosts and is destined to be his bride and return him to ashes.

This drama brought me to tears because of Kim Shin’s background and what he had to death with for thousands of years, and Eun-tak’s story made me want to hug her and protected her from her life. You will also laugh, and hope for everyone’s happiness.

The K2 stars Im Yoon Ah as Go Anna and Ji Chang Wook as Kim Je-ha in a thriller with breathtaking actors. Kim Je Ha is a former soldier for hire. He is also called, K2. He is hired as a bodyguard by Choi Yoo Jin. Yoo Jin is the wife of a presidential candidate and the daughter of a Chaebol family. Meanwhile, Ko An Na is the secret daughter of the presidential hopeful. She is also a recluse.

I Loved this drama because there was so much suspense and the actors did an amazing job with their performances.

Innocent Man stars Moon Chae Won as Seo Eun-gi and Song Joong Ki as Kang Ma-roo in a sad drama that will make you cry your eyes out. The drama is a melodrama which depicts the story of a man called Kang Ma Roo who has been hurt by a woman he loves called Han Jae Hee and how he continues his own life by using several women. He sacrificed his well being for his girlfriend only to be dumped by her for another man. Then, he sets off to take revenge on her. In order to execute his revenge, he approaches Seo Eun Gi, the daughter of the Chaebol group executive.

This drama made me feel like I was in the drama and made me want to punch some of the characters in the face.

Pinocchio stars Park Shin Hye as Choi In-ha and  Lee Jong Suk as Choi Dal-po in a sweet drama that warms your heart. The idealistic Choi In Ha has her work cut out for her when she becomes a broadcast journalist, especially when she suffers from a condition known as “Pinocchio syndrome,” which makes her break out into hiccups whenever she tells a lie. Her rookie colleagues include Choi Dal Po, whose shabby appearance masks his true eloquence and sharp memory; Seo Bum Jo, a wealthy heir who has had everything handed to him in life; and Cha Hye Seung, whose fangirl knowledge comes in handy in covering the news. The 20-something newbie reporters pursue justice as they try to discover themselves in the process.

This drama made me hope for the characters as if they were real, and made me be grateful that “Pinocchio Syndrome” was fake.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo stars Lee Sung Kyung as Kim Bok-joo and Nam Joo Hyuk as Hyeong Jung-joon.This drama is inspired by the life of South Korean Olympic weightlifter gold-medalist Jang Mi Ran and it’s about college athletes who fighting for their dreams and finding love. Kim Bok Joo is a student in Hanwool College of Physical Education. She has shown strength like no other since she was a child as influenced by her former weightlifter father. She looks thoughtless at a first glance, but inside she’s as fragile as glass and has deep recognition. Jung Joon Hyeong is Kim Bok Joo’s best friend. He is a born swimmer but ever since he was disqualified from his first international event, he suffers from ‘start trauma’. Along with Kim Bok Joo, he overcomes his troubles and finds his dream and love. Song Shi Ho is a rhythm gymnast who also attends Hanwool College of Physical Education. She started gymnastics since she was 5 and won the Asian Games at the age of 18. She’s always been the best since then, but mental pressure caused her to break up with Jung Joon Hyung and regret it.

This drama made me scream out loud multiple times because I wanted to cheer on the characters, and if they lost I would be so mad and upset. It made me feel like these were all real events happening.

You Came From The Stars stars Jeon Ji Hyun as Cheon Song-yi and Kim Soo Hyun as Do Min-joon. Do Min Joon is an alien who landed on Earth 400 years ago during the Joseon Dynasty period. He possesses a near perfect appearance and enhanced physical abilities involving his vision, hearing and speed. Later, he discovers that he has three months left on Earth. And that is when he meets Cheon Song Yi, the biggest Hallyu star in Korea.

This drama was adorable and would always make me laugh when I watched it. It was sad, funny, happy, and all the emotions came out of me while watching this drama.
