Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera also known as “ El Chapo ” was Mexico’s most wanted Sinaloa drug cartel.  Chapo was born april 4 1957 in La Tuna Mexico Sinaloa  he was born  into a poor family Chapo’s dad worked at a farm and his mom was a stay at home mom. Because Sinaloa was a very well known place for drug trafficking, Chapo started his criminal career in the 1980s when he was around 23. He first started in the Guadalajara drug cartel though he rapidly rose through drug cartel organization which soon led him to be the leader of the Sinaloa cartel. He came up with more ways to smuggle drugs and transport them. For example, he built air conditioned  tunnels under the Mexico border to smuggle drugs through and get them past the border to the U.S .

Chapo’s organization was known for smuggling marijuana, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. In 1993 he was arrested for murder but was instead found guilty for drug trafficking and possession of firearms. He was sentenced to 20 years in a maximum security prison. He bribed the prison guards and was granted more liberty by prison authorities allowing him to still manage his criminal organization while being in prison. (In 1995 he was granted head leader of the head cartel ). In 2001 he escaped the high security prison with the help of corrupt guards.

In the 21 century Chapo was believed to be responsible for most of the marijuana and cocaine trafficked from Mexico to Columbia, In  2004 the U.S government made it their priority to find Guzman and offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Guzman’s arrest.  In February 2014 he was arrested and involved with the (DEA) on the night of July 11 2015 he escaped once again fleeing the maximum security through a long tunnel that led to a house on a construction site. He rode a motorcycle down the tunnel with ventilation and lighting,

In 2016 he was captured in Sinaloa and within the following year he was extradited to the United States where he was charged with various crimes such as  drug trafficking, money laundering, and murder conspiracy. His trial began in 2018 and in 2019 he was found guilty of all 4 of the charges. 5 months later he was sentenced to life in prison without parole in the U.S with maximum high security.

What makes all this interesting is that Guzman escaped a  total of 2 times in high maximum security prison and 3 times in regular jail. Chapo has a total of 13 children from  separated moms and his sons formed a group calling themselves “los Chapitos’ ‘. One of his wives, Emma Coronel Aispuro,  created a clothing line and would use that to do money laundering and scams. She has since been arrested but was found not guilty and as for El Chapo, there will most likely not be another escape from prison.
